Clean it if
- The carpet is under seven or eight years old and the pile still springs back
- Stains are surface-level: food, drink, mud, a single pet accident caught early
- Traffic lanes look dull but the fibre isn't matted flat or frayed
- There's no smell that comes back a week after a cleaning

Replace it if
- Traffic lanes stay flat and grey after professional cleaning
- Pet urine has reached the underpad; the smell returns with humidity or after every clean

- Allergies or asthma in the house, and the carpet is old enough to hold what cleaning can't remove
